Everyone knows how important brows are. They frame the face and done right, can enhance a whole lot, but done wrong (or simply neglected) they can bring your whole face down.
When I was younger I was always too scared to touch my brows so I left them, plus my Mama always said something about not ever plucking hairs from above, only ever from below and so I just thought it was safer to do neither. They were bushy, they were unruly and they were always something I hated when I looked at photos of myself.
When I lived in Hollywood, I had my virgin brows tamed at the ripe old age of 25 by an amazingly talented woman named Andrea and my whole world changed. Combined with the introduction of Benefit Browzings I was 1000% proud of and in love with my brows.
Browzings is the cutest little compact of eyebrow powder, a tinted brow wax and a couple of mini-tools to achieve the perfect brows. Everything is cuter when tiny sized so I loved this set with a passion. And you know what, in 12 years I have used 2 sets – with my second one still going pretty strong! That’s value for money right there!
Since leaving the US almost 12 years ago, I have shaped and maintained my brows myself with varying degrees of success and satisfaction. Around a year ago I realised that while I had maintained them well independently, they were completely out of symmetry with each other and they had gotten a little thinner than I had intended. I’m still not sure how much of that was over-plucking since I have been less attentive to my brows since having kids tbh, or a combination of age and hair growing less? *sigh, anyway*
For the past year I have been trying to grow them back in with the intention of getting them professionally reshaped once they were back to their original bushy state. But try as I might, that once detested bushiness has not returned and furthermore – there are now gaps. *gasp*
I’ve tried Revitabrow with no success and I’ve been experimenting with a number of different brow products to hide the hole. I am on a quest for the ultimate brows!
Although for years Browzings was my perfect brow product, I felt like I needed to try some others to see if I could find something that suited my needs better. I “invested” (cough cough) in the Elf Eyebrow Kit via iherb for the minuscule price of around NZ$4.31 and their Eyebrow Lifter & Filler Pencil too. The Elf Eyebrow Kit is much the same as the Browzings without the brushes and tweezers, but it is comprised of a brow powder and a brow wax. While the price was pretty nice, the colour was too red for my liking and I haven’t actually used much of it ( but spending under $5 means I feel OK that I haven’t).
Recently I decided it was time to call in the big guns and try a product I have been aware of for years to see if it could be the perfect solution to my brow-issues.
Enter Smashbox Brow Tech Trio. The tiny compact little trio was definitely a major improvement on the Elf and in hindsight on the Browzings too. The colour was much better for my skintone – more ashy, less auburn. Even though I have a lot of natural red in my hair, I definitely do not want red in my brows. This little product is dual toned meaning there is a darker and a lighter brow powder and a setting wax which is colourless. The idea is to use the powders to create a natural looking brow and then apply the wax to hold the unruly ones in place. So far so good. I like that it’s a tiny little item – the same size as a single MAC eyeshadow which doesn’t take up too much space in my make up bag.
The gap I referred to earlier from over-waxing and plucking wasn’t convincingly being covered by the powder form of product and the Elf pencil I had also tried didn’t look natural enough – it really looked like I’d drawn in the gap. But the colour match and the general feel of the Smashbox BrowTech Trio had me feeling like I had found my new and forever brow product.
Until Friday June 12th 2015 ….
I took a visit to Lash Noir in City Works Depot to visit the experts and see what they had to recommend. Mary Jane completed the Anastasia Brow Shape aka BROW MAGIC on me which involved using the measurements of my facial features to create the perfect brow shape for my face. She then waxed and tweezed and tinted to give me brows I could truly love again.
But then came the real magic: using Anastasia Beverly Hills famous DipBrow Pomade, she showed me just how amazing my brows could look and how invisible that pesky gap could be using a product like this! I had been looking to purchase this product online direct from the US but was having so much trouble deciding which shade would be right for me. I ended up buying it from Lash Noir for $5 more than it would have cost from the States and I didn’t have to wait for shipping! Score! I asked my followers on Instagram if they thought my brows looked a little intense because I just wasn’t sure, but after 3 days of applying myself and figuring out ways to tone down the look a little, I am totally head over heels in love with this product.
You need both an angled eyebrow brush to apply the pomade and a “spooley” to brush it out again to create a natural look and depending on your experience with brow products, you may need a little practice as the formulation is quite different from anything else on the market. You only need to use such a tiny amount of product that this small pottle will last me years. I’m deadly serious! And because of it’s formulation you don’t need a setting wax of any kind to keep your brows in place which has always been a necessity for me as my brow hairs are really long and often move (again, I have tried all kinds of things to deal with this: Benefit She Laq, Clear brow gel, Wax and good old hair spray! I kid you not!).
I highly recommend the girls at Lash Noir if you’re in Auckland. It’s a beautiful space that smells amazing and their service is relaxed and professional all at the same time. They certainly know their stuff! And you know what – they offer some fabulous specials on their website and FB page. I got my Brow Magic service for just $40!
I love my new brows and I love how much control I have over them now all with one tiny pottle of one fabulous product. I will carry my Smashbox BrowTech Trio for days I’m in a hurry and can’t spend the extra couple of minutes doing them with the DipBrow, but all in all, I say this product is my new holy grail!
Oh and if you’re wondering about removal … it just wipes right off with a warm facecloth – I haven’t even needed to use cleansers to remove it.
What do you use on your brows?
