Mornings greet us each differently, depending on the stage of life we’re at, the type of person we are and the tasks ahead of us on any particular day. One morning you may slide out of bed around ten, lazily ready yourself for a mid-day lunch meeting while on cruise control. Others of you may be out of the sheets like lightening as your 5am alarm buzzes, hitting the gym for an energetic workout before washing off and enjoying breakfast en route to the office. If you have young children, the time of rising will depend on how many night wakings there were and whether you were organised enough to make school lunches the night before or not.
Whatever your morning ritual and the pace at which you approach the beginning of your day, Nespresso has identified five morning archetypes, selected a Grand Cru coffee to match and enlisted Michelin-starred chef Josh Emett to create a delicious breakfast recipe to fit each one.
At this point I should probably make a confession – I don’t really drink coffee. I have tried. I really have. I love the taste of coffee. I adore the smell of coffee and I enjoy everything that goes with the whole coffee culture. But whenever I drink it, I feel a little off. It makes my tummy turn, so generally I avoid it. I also do not drink caffeinated teas or coke, so possibly my body just doesn’t know how to deal with caffeine. I eat coffee flavoured things and love them. Affogato is one of my favourite desserts. My new approach as of last week is to just start drinking more of it and see if I can’t get over it! *wish me luck*
Along with a small group of other lucky invitees, Nespresso challenged me to choose the morning archetype I most identify with and then attend a special Breakfast with Nespresso event – an event with a difference. In his relaxed way, Josh talked us through his own morning ritual while preparing a yummy Chorizo, Tomato and Paprika Free-range Egg Bake – the breakfast recipe created for The Weekender and then swiftly whipped us up a delicious Breakfast Smoothie, the meal match to The Mover.
Tasked with creating our own version of the Chorizo bake, we were off to the kitchen to see what we could come up with. Josh checked on us regularly, chatted casually and while he may have put some other attendees on edge with his smooth charm, I was all about getting my finished product looking as perfect as his. Once the cooking was complete. we sat down to eat together and enjoyed our meal paired with a cappuccino.
So what am I? I’m absolutely The Mover. If not only because my every day breakfast is generally a healthy one. I feel like if I start my day right then what I’ll reach for during the remainder of the day is either bound to follow suit in the healthy stakes, or be balanced out better thanks to my early morning discipline (usually the latter!) When I’m not parenting small children, morning is definitely my preferred time of day to work out and I have great hopes of returning to that trend in the not so distant future – less dark and warmer mornings of course would help immensely in providing motivation! Josh’s suggestion of infusing a morning smoothie with Roma coffee to get the extra hit of caffeine was one I’d never considered but I’m looking forward to coming up with my own Mover recipe to match the Roma in the next few weeks.
If you’re a Nespresso lover, keep your eyes peeled for that.
In the meantime, check out all the archetypes above as well as The Zen Hunter, The Snoozer and The Early Achiever and see which you most identify with.
