A couple of weeks ago I headed instore to experience a Masterclass with Smashbox. Basically I was there to get schooled in make up application. I love make up and I always do a passable job in getting it from the packaging to my face, but I am no expert and my skills leave a lot to be desired. Being invited to try my hand at a Masterclass was just what I needed to give me confidence.
From the moment I walked in, I felt right at home. I sat in the chair and was ready to learn the tricks of the trade. Smashbox is a professional make up range created Dean and Davis Factor, great grandsons of Hollywood makeup legend Max Factor. Their philosophy is that if the products make the grade in the studio environment, they’ll definitely work in the real world and this reasoning sits well with me!
If you’re a long time follower, you will know that I’ve always been a MAC girl. I started wearing make up when I lived in Hollywood and the reason MAC was my make up of choice was mostly because I walked past the store on Hollywood & Highland every Friday night on my way home from work and would religiously pop in and make a purchase for that weekend’s glamfest. It was affordable, it was nice and I loved the packaging. And because I’m a creature of habit and this product worked for me, it’s the one I’ve always stuck with. I read about other brands and love the sound of them, but I’m too scared to spend money on them in case they don’t deliver.
When I was sent some Smashbox products recently, my first thought was how different they were from that which I was used to. The eye shadows were somehow ‘softer’, they felt finer in their formulation and they applied just beautifully – even with my limited skill in application. The Shimmer powder was luminescent but not sparkly, and the eye liner… well, that product is a revolution as far as I’m concerned! The kit I received came with tutorial instructions on how to achieve a couple of different looks and following the suggested application methods left me feeling pretty good with the results. I still wanted to master better eyeshadow blending though and the all important contouring was on my list of “must learn’s”.
Jess at the Smashbox store in Ponsonby was just the pro I needed to see. She listened to my concerns and my wishes and set about transforming me from mumsy to bombshell (well, that’s how I felt by the end anyway!)
I learnt how to contour my face ala Kim Kardashian, I learnt how and where to highlight, I learnt about the amazing Smashbox range of products for everything I could possibly want or need to do to my face and I learnt how to apply fake eyelashes – something I have never been capable of mastering in the past. I learnt how to put blush in exactly the right place and how to create a nude lip to highlight and complement the strong eyes she created. Ultimately I learnt that this range of products delivers.
Unfortunately I left the make up salon with no where to go but home and housework to attend to. I felt amazing and couldn’t stop looking in the mirror in the car on the way to pick my kids up from kindy and school and marvelling over the power of make up and its ability to transform ones face from ordinary to camera ready!
