When I was around fifteen my Mama had a stint selling Nutri-Metics. For my sixteenth birthday, all I hoped she would give me was a bottle of their fake tanner. It smelled revolting and the resulting colour was orange beyond belief, but I was so desperate for tanned limbs that I didn’t really care.
Being the palest member of my family and seemingly unable to tan – even with both Italian and Maori blood running through these veins – I have wished for golden sun-kissed skin all my life. From my early to my mid-twenties I sun-bedded more times than I care (or dare) to remember and when living in Hollywood, where being a golden hue of something is just part of the uniform, and sun-bed sessions run around $3 a pop, I did what it took to look the part.
And even though I can get my stomach and sometimes arms a passable shade of brown, my legs seem melanin-unaware. Hence my endless search for a great self tanning product.
I’ve used St Tropez Bronzing Mousse for the past few years with complete satisfaction (except for the paying for it part) and for those days when I haven’t had a chance to apply it but need naked-to-be-seen-in-public-pins, I swear by Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs.
When I received this new Manuka Doctor Api-Bronze Anti-Cellulite Bronzing Gel last week, I was more than excited to give it a try. I feel like my standards of self-tan products are super high and with the most sensitive of noses, any tanning product I endorse also needs to be as inoffensive as possible (but let’s face it, every self-tanning lotion, cream, mousse or gel is going to smell slightly ‘self-tanner-ish’!)
This product has got me like WHOA!! There is no need for a mitt, there is no messy application, the gel is silky smooth, completely blendable, lightweight but tinted so you can see where you’ve been and where you’ve missed, and it’s dry time is minimal. I hate having to stand around naked waiting to get dressed after applying other products. And where I assumed the ‘anti-cellulite’ claim was simply referencing the appearance of cellulite always being ultra-minimised when you’re sporting a tan, there is scientific reason for this name.
The Manuka Doctor ApiBronze Anti-Cellulite Bronzing Gel is a multi-tasking self tanner with the extra benefit of improving skin firmness at the same time, which allows it to reduce the appearance of cellulite and helps create younger looking body contours.
Manuka Doctor ApiBronze Anti-Cellulite Bronzing Gel has the signature ingredient of Purified Bee Venom (PBV™), which is a natural potent combination of enzymes, peptides and amino acids and is proven to visibly promote the skin’s elasticity. The added benefit of New Zealand Manuka Honey is well known to help boost the moisturisation and visibly promote skin elasticity. Enriched with Vitamin E to give the skin a silky smooth finish, this non-sticky formula smoothes on evenly and blends flawlessly, leaving the skin refreshed and hydrated with a great glow.
I am a convert. I have applied this a few times this past week – since it’s Fashion Week and and I’m getting all kinds of dressed up. Even after my initial application, on very pale skin, having not seen sun since probably February, there was no streaking. The buildable colour is beautifully natural – think golden rather than orange tinged and the smell is completely minimal.
I will be restocking this one when it’s empty and highly recommend it as your go-to self-tanner this season!
