When I was a kid, I remember my Dad giving us kids each a couple of dollars to buy him a Fathers’ Day gift. I distinctly recall one expedition when we were on the hunt for the perfect gift. New Brighton Mall, Christchurch, circa 1986. “Who’s Gonna Drive You Home” by The Cars was blaring through the in-store sound system as Dad gave us some space and my brothers and I excitedly looked around at how to best spend our $2. Not even enough to buy socks or undies, instead we purchased some hankies and a Croxley Jotter Pad, as well as a packet of orange PK because that was Dad’s favourite.
I’m not sure why that memory is so engrained, but as time has gone on I’ve tried to find gifts for my father, my father in law and now my husband (in conjunction with my kids) that are a token of appreciation for who they are and the role they play in our lives. We don’t go over the top – it’s not a birthday and it’s not Christmas so we don’t go all out, but it is a day of significance and they deserve a little spoiling.
Find me a man who doesn’t like chocolate. Maybe it’s just the men in my family, but they all adore chocolate – the darker the better! Perhaps if the same doesn’t ring true for your menfolk it’s simply that I married a man who is like my father and my husband is simply like his own father in their love for the dark chocolate? Either way, they are all dark chocolate fiends and the better quality, the happier they are. Like pigs in mud!
Dad’s are such special people and I think it’s really important to value them. They’re not always the emotional ones in our lives so they seldom demand affection or appreciation but they need love and recognition just like the rest of us. I believe it’s important to honour them on Fathers’ Day – particularly if you’ve got a good one! This year Devonport Chocolates have created a really gorgeous range of Fathers’ Day Chocolate treats to amuse and delight all Dads nationwide and invited me to try some. I’m already very familiar with their products – I buy a Chocolate Truffle Roll every Christmas for Gran, so I knew these special creations for the Dads would be perfect.
