We’ve just finished Restaurant Month in Auckland – a month long event with an abundance of exciting dining events and foodie experiences around our fair city.
One of the unwavering stalwarts of the Auckland food scene is The Food Truck Garage – brainchild of the talented Michael Van de Elzen. This popular restaurant takes classic “fast food” that is traditionally high in fat, salt and sugar and makes their own delicious, healthier alternatives using fresh local ingredients. Whether it’s a burger, hotdog, soft drink or sundae, they’ve found creative ways to sneak in vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds to boost the nutritional value of each dish without compromising flavour. Kids love the food, but adults love it more.
I asked Brian, Head Chef of The Food Truck Garage the following questions recently:
What has been your inspiration behind the dishes for the Street Eats event?
Our talented team creates healthier alternatives of junk food favourites. We will be serving our signature dishes, featuring a mini version of the Beefroot Burger. These sliders are always a hit with adults and kids alike!
What dish are you anticipating being the stand out for the patrons?
We will be serving a Vegan/Vegetarian version of our Beefroot slider as well as our Redergize Salad. Our Redergize Salad is a stand out dish amongst our regular diners at our restaurant, The Food Truck Garage. Fresh grated beetroot, carrot, quinoa, currants, flax seeds and almonds wrapped in a miso dressing. And of course, you are welcome to add Free Range Chicken to your Redergize Salad!
Will any of the dishes being served remain on menus after the event?
Sure will! These are our stand out classics and the dishes guests keep coming back for!
What does Street Eats offer above any other events in Restaurant Month?
A window to the World of Street Food. An affordable, fast, exciting event with delicious treats under one roof.
If you could choose one other event to attend from the Restaurant Month offerings, which would it be and why?
Well we are now nearing the end of Restaurant Month 2015, and can’t wait to attend Wine AKL, a taste of Federal Street (a must) and of course Street Eats again in 2016!
I managed to head down to Street Eats with my little guy Beau for a quick eat and look around. It was heaving and despite the rain pouring down outside, there were people queueing for entry to this happening event. The food was varied and delicious and there was barely space to move. A wonderful band playing Johnny Cash was in full swing and my babe and I enjoyed bagels from Best Ugly, a Quesadilla from Mexico and then high tailed it out of there!
Did you attend any events during Restaurant Month this year? Next year, I’m all about trying to get on that Dinner by Bike ticket!
