SINCE STARTING THE BUBBALINO KITCHEN, I HAVE DISCOVERED A WHOLE ONLINE WORLD OF BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE PUTTING TOGETHER GORGEOUS, INSPIRING, ENTERTAINING AND JUST PLAIN AWESOME CONTENT. SOME OF THEM YOU MAY HAVE ENCOUNTERED ALREADY, OTHERS YOU MAY NEVER HAVE HEARD OF. I HOPE BY BRINGING YOU THIS SERIES I’M CALLING GETTING FRANK WITH FOODIES, I MIGHT INTRODUCE YOU TO SOME PRETTY WONDERFUL KIWIS BOTH HERE AND ABROAD. EACH WEDNESDAY I WILL BRING YOU SOMEONE I ADMIRE AND RESPECT AND SHARE WITH YOU THEIR ANSWERS TO MY FIVE FOODIE QUESTIONS. I HOPE YOU ENJOY.
Like many of those I interview for this weekly feature, I discovered the Hadlow Girls on Instagram. First off – imagine having four sisters all as beautiful as you. Imagine how much fun you could get up to and how amazing family get togethers must be, especially when you all adore food and can cook with the best of them!? Imagine being these girls’ parents? I bet they’re super proud of their gorgeous brood!
The Hadlow sisters review eateries all over Auckland and indeed New Zealand – must be a tough job huh!? On their website you can find informative insight to each of the establishments they visit with pictures to accompany. If there’s a new cafe or restaurant you’ve been dying to try, chances are they already have and can give you the lowdown.
I’d love you to get comfy and have a read of each of their answers to my Five Foodie Questions.
What is your earliest food memory? How has this defined your relationship with/ethos around food?
Charlotte: Eating delicious home cooking at my Nana’s house – she is an amazing cook! Pasta with meat sauce and sweet Croatian treats like palačinke (crepes) with homemade cherry jam or lemon and sugar. And my Dide (Croatian grandfather) would make the best cheese toasties – the edges were all sealed so the cheese melted and ooozzed!… Yum! Victoria and I also used to sneak glasses of sweet sherry when she wasn’t looking!
Victoria: Eating and cooking with my Croatian Nana, who is a talent in the kitchen! The kitchen has always been the hub of the house and is where all the good gossiping and chatter takes place.
Rachel: Picking my own berries on a farm in Auckland. I love fresh, simple food and I believe you should always have a colourful plate.
Claudia: asking my mum if she could make me a pink pig cake for my 4th birthday – and it was perfect! Covered in a cute, light pink buttercream frosting and with little twirly tail, it fulfilled my childhood dream cake
Laura: Eating a giant pizza in LA. It’s all or nothing when it come to food!
Tell me about your proudest food moment.
Charlotte: I tend to leave the cooking and baking to my sisters, so whenever I do end up cooking I’m usually pretty pleased with myself. One of the dishes I was particularly pleased with was a herbed salmon fillet with capers served with a fennel remoulade.
Victoria: When I’ve made some particularly creative birthday cakes for my sisters – think a big pair of jandals, a bunch of flowers, a Hello Kitty head, an ice cream sundae.. The Woman’s Weekly birthday cake book has them all!
Rachel: It always brings me a lot of satisfaction and happiness to see someone enjoying the food I’ve cooked or baked for them.
Claudia: At high school, I made an easy melt & mix chocolate and coconut cake recipe by Donna Hay for my girl friend’s brithday. When I went to school the following day, all of my girlfriends absolutely loved it!
Laura: Making it into the NZ Herald Viva as a teen foodie!
What is your biggest food dream? (What is your loftiest goal? What do you hope to achieve in your food journey?)
Charlotte: I think it would be pretty cool if the 5 of us sisters were invited to review new restaurants and cafes all over the world in amazing locations.
Victoria: I would love to be the next Martha Stewart (minus the jail time) because she inspires people to cook and bake in the home, comes up with delicious recipes and has an amazing business at the same time, doing what she’s passionate about.
Rachel: Experience all the food I love so much in their country of origin while discovering all the best local eats and national food treasures.
Claudia: To dine at Eleven Madison Park, New York.
Laura: To experience all different cultures and cuisines around the world.
Your most favourite ingredient and why?
Charlotte: I love the Master Foods ‘Moroccan’ seasoning – I bake my chicken in it to make chicken salads all the time!
Victoria: Almonds, because they are so versatile and have an amazing, distinct flavour. Whether you’re putting them in a sweet cake, making raw treats, tossing them over veges, eating them roasted or plain, covering them in spices or sugar, eating them as a healthy, energising snack…they are delicious and the options are endless!
Rachel: Do I have to pick just one? Garlic, lemon and tomatoes are three I’d struggle to live without. They’re all super versatile and lift the flavour within any dish.
Claudia: Would have to be fresh dates. I try to limit the refined sugar in my diet but when I need a sweet snack, I can always count on a dates gooey, caramel flavour to curb the sugar craving! Also, they are so versatile when making healthy treats – my favourite being vegan chocolate and caramel slice… delish!
Laura: Salt – it adds flavour to everything.
If you could create the perfect scene including your dream person, in a dream location indulging in a dream meal – what would that look like? Person, place and meal?
Charlotte: My husband Johnny. At a trendy cafe by a canal in Amsterdam. Drinking champagne and eating oysters. (I’ve actually done this and it was the best!)
Victoria: Jack Sparrow / Johnny Depp (a la Pirates of the Caribbean), beach, BBQ’d fish with an exotic side, maybe including some coconut and rum based cocktails.
Rachel: Croissant and coffee while shopping on the Champs-Élysées with Taylor Swift
Claudia: It would have to be with my ultimate, fictional celebrity crush – Chuck Bass from Gossip Girl… at a beautiful restaurant overlooking the crystal blue waters of Mykonos… drinking champagne and having a five-course, Greek inspired lunch, crafted by a three star Michelin chef… Dreamy!
Laura: A huge plate of fresh fruit in the Maldives with my boyfriend.
