SINCE STARTING THE BUBBALINO KITCHEN, I HAVE DISCOVERED A WHOLE ONLINE WORLD OF BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE PUTTING TOGETHER GORGEOUS, INSPIRING, ENTERTAINING AND JUST PLAIN AWESOME CONTENT. SOME OF THEM YOU MAY HAVE ENCOUNTERED ALREADY, OTHERS YOU MAY NEVER HAVE HEARD OF. I HOPE BY BRINGING YOU THIS SERIES I’M CALLING GETTING FRANK WITH FOODIES, I MIGHT INTRODUCE YOU TO SOME PRETTY WONDERFUL KIWIS BOTH HERE AND ABROAD. EACH WEDNESDAY I WILL BRING YOU SOMEONE I ADMIRE AND RESPECT AND SHARE WITH YOU THEIR ANSWERS TO MY FIVE FOODIE QUESTIONS. I HOPE YOU ENJOY.
I first became aware of Hunter Gatherer Gourmet when I received a packet of their Ginger Muffin Mix in a food delivery from a PR company for the Food Show. I don’t eliminate food groups from mine or my family’s diet just because and enjoy food in all forms and flavours. But I made up the muffins expecting them to be disgusting quite honestly, and was incredibly pleasantly surprised at how delicious they were! I then visited The Food Show and met the beautiful lady behind Hunter Gatherer Gourmet in the flesh. What a bright and vibrant person Julena is and how passionate about Hunter Gatherer Gourmet! She has established a wonderful business offering the Paleo community and those seeking alternative options a delicious and quality unprocessed packaged muffin mix. Her passion is about the quality of ingredients used and eating to ensure you are feeling as amazing as your body has the potential to feel. Who wouldn’t want that?
So please, grab your lunch and take a read of Julena’s answers to my Five Foodie questions.
What is your earliest food memory? How has this defined your relationship with/ethos around food?
My earliest would be at intermediate school actually, in Home Economics. I absolutely loved it, and remember little things like how to check eggs were okay before adding to mix. I also won an award for Home Economics, so I guess I was always going to enjoy baking after that and the feeling has obviously stayed with me – I still always enjoy getting praise for my creations, but who doesn’t love it when people’s faces light up when they taste something you have made?
However, my parents are also Croatian, and I grew up on an orchard with a fruit and veggie shop so there was a constant supply of fresh wholesome food, and a sense of abundance. I think this gave me an appreciation for ‘real’ food and taught me to prioritise quality ingredients and to make as much as possible from scratch. I’m also an entertainer and hostess at heart, I love sharing meals with friends and family, and I think it’s always better to have much more than you need! My husband is now fully appreciative of our two protein mains dinner party menus.
Tell me about your proudest food moment.
Launching our baking mix after months and months of recipe testing, and hearing from delighted customers how surprisingly tasty and easy it is for them to create delicious but yet nutritious baking, which was exactly what I set out to do with our products. Making healthy easy.
What is your biggest food dream? (What is your loftiest goal? What do you hope to achieve in your food journey?)
I would love to open a proper paleo café/restaurant like Hu Kitchen in New York. Catering for eat in or take out, it would include an extensive hot food section, large vegetable dish selection, prepacked takeout meals, or frozen home dinners, fresh treats, a smoothie menu that isn’t just packed with fruit. I’d also include a kids menu that is actually real, tasty food for small people, just smaller portions with maybe a few paleo versions of favourites like pizza and chips. Plus the whole venture would be sustainable. Taking over Toru in Ponsonby Central would be perfect, I noticed it was up for sale…
Your most favourite ingredient and why?
Vanilla. Not only does it smell amazing, it really elevates the taste up to new heights.
If you could create the perfect scene including your dream person, in a dream location indulging in a dream meal – what would that look like? Person, place and meal?
I would like to have a 5 course meal prepared by a French chef, with the Queen of England in Buckingham Palace. Complete with amazing matching wine for each course.
