Finding your perfect skincare is akin to finding your perfect hairdresser. Once you’ve nailed it, you don’t want to do anything to jeopardise that relationship. As someone who has the privilege of frequently trying other brands of skincare, I am always open to and hoping even to finding a product that will rival the love I have for Dermalogica, but alas, we aren’t there yet.
I’ve been using Dermalogica on and off for around 13 years and I’ve spoken before about turning my back on the range when I became a SAHM in favour of supermarket brand ranges due to a single income. I was never truly happy in this place. Not that my skin suffered because of this necessary change in lotion application, but it just never felt amazing and I never felt like I was treating my skin to anything special during that time.
As I climbed higher than 35 a few years back, I decided that I needed to give my skin priority and began purchasing Dermalogica again. My selection of products has always been self-diagnosed and from reading the product information and ‘best suited to’ recommendations on their websites.
At the invitation of Dermalogica NZ I was very fortunate last year to enjoy their Skin Mapping Analysis at Bare Waxing in Grey Lynn. I enjoyed a full overview of my skin type and was recommended Dermalogica products best suited to my individual needs. Thankfully, most of what I had been using in years past was correct, but there were extra products suggested and a question mark on the cleanser I was using. It felt so good to have my face analysed by a professional and for me to think about the questions she asked concerning my skin. It was a wonderful opportunity to get in touch with my skincare routine and rituals and identify any areas that I needed to focus more attention on.
As a result of that appointment and treatment, I am happier than anything with the product line up I’m using on my skin at the moment and wanted to share the details with you in case you’re looking for a new range of skincare yourself.
First up: My Daily Skincare Routine
In the morning I generally only wash my face with a face cloth (unless I shower in the morning, in which case I will use my Daily Microfoliant for a morning slough), before applying a few spritzes of the Multi-Active Toner, followed by my much adored Skin Smoothing Cream and a quick swipe under each arm pit with my favourite ever Environmental Control Deodorant. This is truly the only natural deodorant that has ever worked for me. It’s an odour-neutralising, essential oil-based deodorant that is suited to even the most sensitive skin with a blend of Coriander, Parsley, Clove and Hyssop.
Evenings look a little different as I start with the Precleanse to remove make up, followed by the Special Cleansing Gel for a double cleanse. I rinse this off with a facecloth to ensure a completely make up free face, spritz on the Multi-Active Toner once more and then apply a face oil (not presently from the Dermalogica range, although the Overnight Repair Serum is amazing for night use).
My favourites from the range for a little something special include:
Skin Hydrating Masque
A refreshing, moisturising masque to remedy dry, stressed skin. It has such a lovely cooling feeling as you apply it to your skin and allow it to work it’s magic. It doesn’t dry out like other masques can and it feels truly like you’re giving your face a big glass of water.
I only use this once every couple of weeks because it’s an intense formulation, but it blows my mind how it works. As soon as you squirt a little into your palms and rub them together, the product heats up. It’s honestly like rubbing fire in your hands. It combines physical and chemical exfoliants to refine your skins texture and honestly reveals smoother, fresher skin immediately.
A gentle and light, firming eye treatment – more of a liquid than a lotion that contains an advanced peptide known to encourage collagen-producing activities to help smooth fine lines and target the signs of ageing around the delicate eye area. Just what I need at this stage of life!
I adore this powerful firming complex that smells amazing and helps combat lines around the delicate eye area and upper lip. It contains Vitamin A (Retinol) and vitamins C and E improve elasticity while scavenging free radicals.
This is a tinted breakout minimiser that I use under makeup for daytime coverage of that pesky once a month pimple that plagues me. It contains Sulfur and Zinc Oxide which help eliminate breakout-causing bacteria, while clearing excess oil and congestion in the follicle.
An intense revitalising treatment containing powerful peptide serum with Argan and Rose oils helps stimulate cellular repair overnight. It smells beautiful the essential oils help stimulate collagen production to firm and renew resilience. I’ll take all of that please!
I love the Hydrablur Primer for a pre-foundation base. It’s silky and has easy to apply coverage which creates a lovely base for foundation or BB Cream. It transforms the skin by blurring the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, mattifying oily shine and imparting a silky smooth finish. The result is the perfect canvas for make-up application – or a natural radiant make-up-free appearance when used alone.
If you feel like you could use an overhaul of your skincare regime and some professional assistance for your skin without paying for a consultation, Dermalogica offer their Face Mapping service free of charge to anyone. I would highly recommend you visit a counter near you for your own skin mapping experience.
You can find details of the Face Mapping service here.
I order my products directly from the Dermalogica website, shipping is free and delivery is usually next day. I have been so satisfied with their service. Also you get to choose little samples with each order so you can try other products that you may be curious about but not wanting to invest in just yet. And being on their mailing list has been great – so many wonderful specials are run regularly. This is how I got all my minis that I use to travel with.
