I’m sure glad my first born wasn’t a boy because when I cast my mind eight years back, the options for dressing little lads was pretty bleak. Even five years ago it was still more exciting to dress girls than boys, but you know what? In 2016 the fashion scene for our sons is bloody beautiful. And you know what else? I can honestly say that I would happily wear any of these items I’ve pulled out to show you myself. They may be sized for little men, but I’d throw them on in a heartbeat because they’re all incredibly comfortable and super cool.
Bring on the Boys of Summer! (which also happens to be one of my all time favourite songs!)
Monochrome with pops of yellow and blue is my favourite colour palette for both my boys right now – one blue eyed, one brown, one sandy haired, one blonde. Bold singular prints or repetitive prints feature heavily this coming Summer and everything I’ve chosen for my boys allows them to express themselves and comfortably.
I’ve rounded up a few of my picks for the coming months and where possible, links to their online stores.
Gone are the days of boring plain coloured tees. And worse still, the loud printed versions sporting trucks or brightly coloured trains. And even though I am a stripe lover from way back, this Summer there is so much other pattern to choose from for my kids, I’m gonna forgo the stripes! Big call!
Instead we’re loving fun versions of Wild animals like this Dino tee. How about this funky animal illustration tee that shows personality and fun? This classic throwback imagery from Daddy’s childhood is going to look the cutest on my little blondie who adores Stormtroopers, and Buzz & Woody are going to make an appearance with this much loved cartoon character tee.
Although it’s Summer we are looking forward to, you know as well as I do that we still experience cool evenings and sometimes rainy days that call for long pants. I’ve included longs as well as shorts because, well, New Zealand.
A classic skinny leg jean is a safe bet and these pale grey skinnies lend themselves nicely to brighter days. These colourful boardies are waiting for a splash in the ocean soon and can effortlessly take your little guy from the beach to the cafe.
Cool with a capital C, these ripped jeans with suspenders I just could not go past and the denim blue relaxed look shorts are our already go-to bottoms for maximum comfort and ultimate cool on days when the sun has been sneaking a peek.
We tend to spend more time out socialising in the Summer months which means the sun is lower when we venture home. For this reason I always pack a long sleeved option for my kids to throw on when it’s time to leave the party.
This Vintage Black Crew is a style I wish came in my size. The fabric is amazingly soft and perfectly stretchy, the stone washed look is so on trend and that detailing in the back is what takes it from your standard functional sweatshirt to super hip.
Big Cats are my boys’ favourite animals and this Tiger print sweater would look adorable on both of them, at the same time! Twinning is winning!
I wish we’d had access to this gorgeous blazer when my brother got married earlier this year. Regardless, any little dude in this with jeans – swoon! And because grey is my favourite colour and zips are also a favourite feature, I’m crushing hard on this Grey Marl Zip Up Sweater. Again, please make in my size.
Perhaps the biggest development in making boyswear cooler is the accessories that are now readily available for the mini males. Hats and glasses go a long way to creating your own little hipster, but trend and style aside, both are functional and to be encouraged to keep that harsh Kiwi sun off our precious cargo’s precious skin. Choose from hip trucker style caps or slick fedoras. And with these aviator glasses, he’ll be ready to hit the beach and catch some rays.
Jandals make an appearance every year under the Christmas tree and I always get mine from Cotton on Kids for the plethora of designs on display. Sturdy sandals needn’t be lacking in personality and for that reason we are loving these brightly coloured versions from Bobux this year. Choose High Tops in a light colour like these and you can rock them with any shorts or pants already featured and the bright yellow kicks are perfect for an outing or taking a casual stroll along the beach.
I really love what local and international brands are bringing to the game for our little guys this season and am looking forward to a hip Summer with two trendy kids in tow. Hope you’ve found something you love in this capsule collection too.
