We’ve started a new tradition in our family. Friday nights have officially become Family Movie Night. We are almost a month in and it’s the talk of the week from Wednesday as everyone realises we are only two sleeps away from our favourite family time again. Each week someone gets to choose a movie and a meal. We’re on a roster of sorts that is a little higgledy-piggledy, but each of the kids have had a turn and this week it’s mine!
We congregate in the Playroom once all kiddies are bathed and PJ’ed and we cozy up on the couch and bean bags and press play. Let me backtrack a little.
We have a bookshelf full of amazing kids movies and family favourites that we’ve watched over, and over and over. I’m betting it’s the same in your house – one kid adores The Good Dinosaur, another looooves Star Wars and the other is less specific, but generally will opt for something with dogs in it or princesses or adventure. This has meant in times past that when it was Beau’s turn to pick a movie, it was always The Good Dinosaur (to the point where the older two are now totally sick of this cute movie) and when it was Aston’s turn, he would predictably pull out one of the six Star Wars movies at hand and while Daddy loved that too, Mama would rarely sit and watch because there’s only so much Star Wars this gal can handle!
We have implemented a new rule. That is: the movie has to be something we have never seen before. Get out of our comfort zone and all that! Netflix has opened our options up extensively because there are sooooo many movies to choose from. There’s classics, there’s new movies, there’s in-betweens, there’s pretty much anything you could wish for to keep us going for a good few Friday nights yet. On her turn a couple of weeks ago, Tahlia chose something involving dogs (no surprises there), Aston chose a movie involving action (no surprises there). Beau kicked off the first Family Movie Night and chose (you guessed it) The Good Dinosaur, which is why the rule has come into play!
Friday night just passed it was my turn to choose and I was almost frothing at the mouth with excitement to press play on The Neverending Story!! I have been trying for years to find the original version with no luck and couldn’t believe it when I found it on Netflix. The kids said that because I had already seen it, I was kind of breaking the rules, but I figure parents can do that right!? 🙂
I made burritos (everyone’s favourite) and we snuggled up to watch it. It got a little scary in parts (I had forgotten all the yucky bits and just remembered how pretty the Empress was ahahaha!) but we loved it and it was just as good as I remembered it – maybe not the soundtrack though. Soooo eighties with all those synthesizers!
Others on my list when my turn rolls around again include The Princess Bride and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I love that you can search based on genre, mood, and recommendations based on previously watched shows and movies.
I don’t know how we lived without Netflix, but I’m loving everything about it – except how many shows I am slightly addicted to and how few hours there are in the day to watch them. Eeeeeek!
What are you loving on Netflix right now?
