We packed up everything to move out of our house for four months for our renovation and when it came time to start back to school after the long Summer holidays I could not find one of my kids drink bottles anywhere. A friend suggested using my Fly Buys points to buy a new CamelBak – something that hadn’t crossed my mind. Over the years I’d been pulling my card out whenever I was asked for it at the checkout, but not actively seeking out opportunities to earn points.
The brand new CamelBak arrived the day after I placed my order and after that I got excited about finding ways to accumulate as many points as possible moving forward.
Keep that thought in mind.
It’s no secret I love spending time in my kitchen. I loved spending time in my kitchen when it was basic (but perfectly functional) and I absolutely adore spending time in it now – in fact some days it feels as though I’m there from morning till night. It was also no secret that when I finally got my dream kitchen, I was 100% going to get gas for cooking. I have always loved the look and the feel of cooking with gas and couldn’t wait for this upgrade. Making good quality food for my family is one of my top priorities in life and much of my time revolves around food – thinking about it, planning for it, shopping for it, creating it and ultimately (and most enjoyably!) eating it.
Since realising that my Fly Buys points earning could be more deliberately earned and then actively intentionally spent, I started looking for ways to continue in that vein.
Earning a few points here and there as I used to added up over time, it wasn’t the smartest way to make the system work for me. I’ve spent the past few months changing up the way I shop and pay for utilities to ensure my Fly Buys points balance is growing at the best rate possible. After all, why wouldn’t I want to make my money work for me?
Once our kitchen was complete I hooked up our gas with Genesis Energy and linked my contract to my Fly Buys account so I’m going to be earning monthly points on my bill. I figure that while I’m paying large bills each month for utilities, it makes sense to earn points on that money so I can get something back. Don’t you think? I’m liking this idea.
I like to shop where there are good prices so I alternate between the major supermarkets for our big shop, as well as buying from meat suppliers direct and online and get the bulk of our fresh produce from my local greengrocer. The only major supermarket chain that is affiliated with Fly Buys is New World and because it is straight up without a doubt my favourite indoor shopping experience, I head there whenever my budget allows for a little aisle peruse.
So after I’d earned points by ingredients shopping at New World and using gas from Genesis to cook with and in doing so have earned Fly Buys on all those purchases, it was time to redeem the points I had collected.
I’d had my eye on a Paella pan for a couple of years and decided to use the points to add one to my new kitchen – after all, that storage at the top of my scullery looked like the perfect out-of-the-way place for it to live.
I ordered the pan via the Fly Buys website and a hefty paella shaped package was on my doorstep just two days later. What did I do? I got cooking!
If you’re a Fly Buys member like me, but didn’t realise you could be more active in earning your points so that you could then be more active in spending them (yes please!), there are a few ways you can make sure you’re getting the most out of your membership.
I’m not a BNZ customer, but if you are, here’s a goodie: you can pay for purchases at Fly Buys retailers with your credit card, as well as swiping your Fly Buys card, which is what’s known as ‘double dipping’ on points. It’s completely legit and pretty blimmin’ awesome. And if you’re still looking for additional points, top up with fuel at Z stations because you earn extra points that way too!
Click on through to sign up for Fly Buys if you’re not already a member, or if you already are but would like to find out more about where you need to be shopping to earn as many points as possible.
Make your money work for you honey. I know it’s something I’m trying to consciously to work on at the moment
